Guide

How to answer a security questionnaire: a step-by-step guide.

Security questionnaires decide whether a deal moves forward. This guide shows how to answer them accurately and quickly, without overclaiming, and how to need fewer of them.

What is a security questionnaire?

A security questionnaire is a list of questions an enterprise buyer sends a vendor to assess its security before buying. It can be a standard format such as SIG, CAIQ or VSAQ (compared in SIG vs CAIQ vs VSAQ) or the buyer’s own spreadsheet, and it ranges from 20 to several hundred questions.

Step by step

  1. Identify the format and deadline. A standard format means you can reuse earlier answers; a custom one means mapping questions to them.
  2. Collect your evidence once. Policies, SOC 2 or ISO reports, pen test results, architecture notes, sub-processor list. Keep them in one place.
  3. Answer from evidence, not memory. Every answer should point to a policy, report or system setting.
  4. Be honest about gaps. "Partially, with a compensating control" or "planned for Q2" beats a yes you cannot prove. Overclaiming is what turns a questionnaire into a contract problem later.
  5. Keep answers short and specific. Name the control, the tool and the frequency: "MFA is enforced for all employees through Google Workspace."
  6. Get the right review. Engineering checks technical answers, legal checks contractual ones, someone accountable signs off.
  7. Save approved answers. Your next questionnaire should start from this one.
  8. Point buyers to your trust center. Share it with the questionnaire so reviewers find documents without another round of emails.

The questions you will see most

CategoryTypical questions
Access controlMFA, SSO, least privilege, offboarding
Data protectionEncryption at rest and in transit, data location, retention

Common mistakes

  • Answering yes to everything
  • Copying answers that no longer match your setup
  • Attaching documents that should be under NDA
  • Leaving it to whoever is closest to the email, without review
  • Starting from scratch every time

Automating security questionnaires

Security questionnaire automation software drafts answers from your existing evidence. What matters is not speed alone but whether you can defend the answer: Sekorti shows the source on every answer, flags what it cannot verify instead of guessing, and nothing goes back to a buyer without a person approving it. It handles SIG, SIG Lite, CAIQ, VSAQ and custom spreadsheets, and you can start free.

Receive fewer questionnaires

A current trust center answers the common questions before a buyer sends the spreadsheet, and a security chatbot answers the specific ones. Both cut the number of full questionnaires that reach your team.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long should it take to answer a security questionnaire?

Manually, a long questionnaire can take days across several people. With a maintained answer library or automation, most of the work becomes reviewing drafts rather than writing answers.

What if we cannot answer yes to a question?

Say what is true: partially implemented, a compensating control, or a date it is planned. Buyers expect gaps in smaller vendors; they do not accept answers that turn out to be wrong.

Is AI safe to use for security questionnaires?

Only if every answer comes from your own evidence, shows its source and is reviewed by a person before it is sent. A general chatbot that always has an answer is a risk.
